Novak Djokovic's tensions with his coaching staff resurfaced again at the US Open, even when the 23-time Grand Slam winner cruised to a round of 16 win.
Djokovic raced into the US Open quarter-finals after a comfortable straight-sets victory against Croatian player Borna Gojo. The Serbian completed his win in two hours and 25 minutes and will now face home player Taylor Fritz in the final eight.
Despite the relative ease with which Djokovic saw off Gojo, there were still some disagreements between the 36-year-old and his coaching team. The frosty relationship between Djokovic and his team often rears its head in the Grand Slams, but the three-time US Open explained in his post-match interview that the confrontations are often generally productive.
"They keep me sharp, I keep them sharp. I demand the most focus from my team and they do the same for me. In the heat of the moment, a lot of fun words come out,”
"Coaching is allowed this year to some extent and obviously when I am on that side I try to communicate with them, which is not always the most efficient way and easiest way, but it helps. It helps when I lose the rhythm on the serve or whatever it is. I look at them and then and try to get some advice, some guidance and I get it I must say.”
At the 2023 US Open so far, Djokovic has generally had few issues with three straight sets wins from four matches. However, the 36-year-old encountered some resistance from his compatriot Laslo Djere in the third round as he had to battle back from two sets down to progress.
By reaching the next round at Flushing Meadows, Djokovic is one more quarter-final appearance away from matching Roger Federer's record of reaching 57 career Grand Slam quarter-finals.
