Denis Shapovalov will be competing at the 2024 Geneva Open after accepting a late wild card entry into the ATP 250 event.
The Canadian remembers Geneva quite fondly because he played there before. The first time he went to the city was back in 2021 when he actually went all the way to the final of the tournament.
He faced Casper Ruud in that final and lost in two sets. Although it was unfortunate, it was still a nice experience for him, so he decided to come back the year after and once again played decent tennis.
He didn't make the final, though, as he was beaten by Ilya Ivashka in the first match. Last year, he couldn't compete because he was dealing with injury woes at that time, but he'll be back this year to try and fine-tune his game for Roland Garros.
It's been a tricky season for Shapovalov so far because he hasn't played the best tennis. He looked pretty decent at times, but overall, his level has been quite unstable. His overall record so far is 8-12, and it's not that better on clay.
He's only 2-4 on the red dirt with both of his wins coming in Madrid. He bested Facundo Diaz Acosta and Tomas Martin Etcheverry, which are pretty solid wins on clay, but he wasn't able to carry that over to Rome, where he traditionally plays really strong tennis.
He will now try to find his level in Geneva, but he really needs a solid run to build up his confidence. Having done that in Geneva before might help him do it again.
What may not help him is having the world no. 1 at the same event, as Novak Djokovic also accepted a wild card into the Geneva Open. The tournament is going to be played next week, running from May 19th till the 25th.
