Carlos Alcaraz has provided an update after withdrawing from Spain's Davis Cup endeavours, promising support as he rests up.
The Spaniard added his name to the list of players who won't be playing in the upcoming Davis Cup Finals. It's not particularly shocking as the timing of the competition comes right after the US Open, leaving those who had deep runs rather fatigued.
Alcaraz is one of those players, and after playing in the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Masters, he just needs a rest. Initially, Alcaraz was expected to play as Spain has a tough group, but he won't, so we won't get that looming match between the 20-year-old Spaniard and Novak Djokovic.
Djokovic himself is expected to withdraw his participation after this deep US Open run and the Cincinnati triumph, but we'll see. When it comes to Alcaraz, he named fatigue as the reason for his withdrawal.
I was very excited to play for 🇪🇸 Davis in Valencia, but I have to listen to my body after a very long tour. I need to stop and rest, physically and mentally. The calendar is very demanding, there is still a lot of season left, and now I have to recharge my batteries. Good luck to the Spanish team! 💪🏻 I will be supporting you strongly! Come on!
Alcaraz is expected to play for Spain should the country book a spot in the knockout stages in November and that's the far more important call-up but without him, their chances are severely diminished.
His return will likely come at the end of the month in Asia, with a couple of big events coming up, such as the Shanghai Masters. It's the first time Alcaraz will play in East Asia, starting in Beijing, where he's the first name on the entry list. The event begins on September 28th.
