"All this hard work would not make sense" - Thiem hopes to win another Grand Slam

Dominic Thiem was enjoying the best moments of his career before he suffered an injury that held back his progress and caused a major drop in the ATP Rankings.

Every year from 2016 until 2020, Dominic Thiem ended the season in Top 10 of the ATP Rankings and collected at least one title. In 2020, that title was the US Open trophy, when he defeated his good friend, Alexander Zverev, in the final.

Currently, the Austrian is ranked 165th and fights for points to move up the rankings. At the 2022 Gijon Open, he played one of the best matches since coming back as he also concluded after the match. Recently, Thiem also spoke to as.com as he detailed his goals and plans for the next season.

"My career is divided into the first part, which was before the injury, and the second, which is now, and the first was incredible. I was able to beat all the best, win many tournaments, including a Grand Slam," Thiem said.

"And then the injury came and my trajectory stopped. Now it's a very interesting experience, because I have to be able to compete with all the top players again and that's good. Obviously, the matches and victories against Federer, Nadal and Djokovic are helping me, because they were a great experience."

Speaking about winning Grand Slam titles, as he managed to do at the 2020 US Open, the Austrian hinted that it's his main goal that he's working towards.

"I believe I can do it. If not, I would leave my career. I was at the top, in the top three in the ranking. And I do have the feeling that I am able to fight again for the big titles, for the Slams, and beat anyone. If not, all this hard work would not make sense to me. I hope I can do it next year."
