Dominic Thiem won't be playing in the 2023 Argentina Open quarterfinals as he lost to Juan Pablo Varillas.
In the first round of the ATP 250 tournament in Buenos Aires, the Austrian defeated the seventh-seeded Alex Molcan, and recorded his first victory of the season. After the match, he was visibly happy about his win and wanted to keep it going also in the second round.
He had a great chance to do so, as he played against world no. 101, Juan Pablo Varillas, who had to play qualifying at the 2023 Argentina Open.
But the match didn't start well for Thiem. Varillas broke his serve twice and he had a chance to do it also the third time to win the first set 6-1. Although the Austrian saved that set point, and took one break back in the next game, he couldn't avoid the first-set loss, losing it 4-6.
In the second set, Thiem didn't start well once again. He got broken early and this time, he was not able to respond and after an hour and 48 minutes, former world no. 3 lost 4-6, 4-6.
Soon, the 2020 US Open champion will compete at the ATP 1000 event in Indian Wells, for which he received a wild card.
