Only a few days ago, Carlos Alcaraz arrived to the French capital for the last ATP 1000 event of the year and he was hoping to end the season with a success.
First, his participation was in doubt because of a knee issue. However, the young Spaniard was soon cleared by doctors and participated at the 2022 Paris Masters. He made it to the quarterfinals, where he was forced to retire against Holger Rune, who will play the final in Paris.
After the match, he revealed that he had a problem with his abdominal and that was soon confirmed also by his medical team. A few hours after his retirement from the Paris Masters quarterfinals, Carlos Alcaraz announced that he won't be competing at this year's ATP Finals and Davis Cup Finals.
"After my withdrawal yesterday and having been evaluated by my medical team, unfortunately this is the result of my injury: an internal oblique muscle tear in the left abdominal wall with an estimated recovery time of six weeks," he said in a statement.
"Unfortunately I won't make the ATP Finals or the Davis Cup Finals. It is tough and painful for me to miss these two events, which are so important to me, but all I can do is be positive and focus on my recovery. Thank you for the support!"
He can still finish as world no. 1 in the ATP Rankings as he needs Rafael Nadal to earn less than 1 000 points or Stefanos Tsitsipas to not win the event. At the 2022 ATP Finals, Taylor Fritz will replace the young Spaniard as Hubert Hurkacz and Holger Rune will be the first two alternates.
