Caroline Wozniacki is in the second week of the US Open, and the success has been surprising to some but not to her.
The Danish player announced her comeback to tennis not too long ago, and it's been going amazing so far. Obviously, she wouldn't have attempted this comeback if she didn't believe it to be possible, so in a sense, this shouldn't come as a surprise.
It does to many because coming back is not easy. We've seen active players struggle to come back efficiently after an injury. Alexander Zverev took several months to start playing as well as he could after coming back earlier this year from injury.
Wozniacki is playing her 3rd event on the WTA Tour, and she is already in the second week of the US Open. That's amazing but also not surprising to her. Asked about it following her win over Jennifer Brady, Wozniacki deemed it unsurprising.
Honestly, not really (smiling). I guess I always had the belief in myself. It takes a little time just to get back into the match rhythm. I was practicing really well. I felt like I had a great rhythm. I was working on my fitness to get back into good shape.
All of that I knew, knowing what I've experienced throughout my career, I knew where I was at. Obviously day by day I feel like I'm getting a little bit better. Would I have been surprised had I lost in the first round? No. Would I be surprised if I keep winning? Also no.
While her comeback was driven by a desire to compete, she didn't approach it as essential for her career. As she explained earlier, she already did everything in her career; there is not much missing there, so she doesn't have that pressure to perform well.
She goes out there to compete and is fine with whatever happens.
I think it was just kind of a go out there, give it your best, fight your heart out. If I play my best tennis, I know I'm tough to beat. Someone really has to play well. At this point I'm just happy to be in the fourth round, and anything can happen from now on, as well.
