Iga Swiatek proved to be the best player this week at the 2023 Poland Open, but even she is only human, and humans make mistakes.
For the second day in a row, Swiatek faced the situation of having to play two matches in one day. She first had to play two matches on Saturday in order to catch up after bad weather delayed some of her previous matches and then it happen again. This time though it wasn't the same type of weather that delayed the match, but something different.
She found herself up 5-2 against Wickmayer in the second set after winning the opening set. As the night approached, she found herself rushing a bit too much, and her opponent managed to take advantage of that to make it 5-5. The match was abandoned due to darkness which is why they returned earlier today to finish off that match. The score was 5-5 upon resumption.
It was in that match that something odd happened as the Pole produced probably the miss of the season. Swiatek was getting ready to serve in the tiebreak of the second set against Wickmayer when she produced a rather spectacular moment.
It wasn't an ace or a winner but rather a very badly missed serve that ended up on the wrong side of the court. It was a rather hilarious moment for the crowd to witness because it's a great reminder that even the world number ones are humans.
They make mistakes like everybody else, even if they're rare. Makes it more worthwhile when it happens. Still, she managed to win that match and then produced a sensational effort in the final to win her maiden trophy on Polish soil.
It's been a long-time dream of hers and she finally get it done. As for the miss, well you can check it out below.
