The fans at the French Open are known for sometimes being quite harsh if they are unhappy at a player, and Alize Cornet felt the full force of that in her last match.
Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev are among the players who have already been booed at this year's French Open. This has caused some controversy, with tennis fans split on how justified the actions of the crowd have been.
Usually, French players receive vocal backing from their home fans, as Cornet did in the previous round against Jelena Ostapenko. But they are sometimes also not immune to the wrath of the crowd.
Cornet faced Qinwen Zheng on Court Philippe-Chatrier in the third-round. Unfortunately, the 32-year-old was struggling with an injury throughout the match. That led to Zheng racing into a 6-0 3-0 lead.
Eventually, Cornet did not feel she could go an anymore. Rather than risking making the injury worse, she elected to retire from the match. However, many of the Parisian fans showed the local player no sympathy.
As can be seen in the video below, several spectators booed Cornet after retiring. It is important to note that it was not all the fans but the ones who did jeer created quite a noise on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
After the match, Cornet commented on this situation. She did not hide her displeasure about receiving such a hostile reaction from her own fans and felt the reaction was completely unwarranted.
"The whistles almost hurt me more than the injury itself. It's abuse. When you see everything I've been giving on the court for years, it's unfair .With the pain, at some point it no longer makes sense to continue. It was my decision to go on the field but I was never going to forfeit a Grand Slam, I tried."
