Coco Gauff has reflected on serving 17 double faults in her quarterfinal at the Indian Wells Open, which is a record for a WTA match this season.
Gauff still managed to win despite the 17 double faults and progressed to the semifinal in the process. This shows just how formidable the rest of the American's game is, since most players would undoubtedly lose with such serving issues.
It is often Gauff's forehand that receives the most attention from the media, with it being seen as much weaker than her superb backhand. Recently, her coach, Brad Gilbert, talked about why it is not easy to fix her forehand.
Currently, it is her serve that has grabbed the headlines after the number of double faults. This is despite Gauff having a lot of success on her first serve in the match by winning 74% of first serve points.
After the match, Gauff did an interview with Sky Sports, which can be viewed below. The 20-year-old discussed her problems on second serve, as well as her tennis as whole in the short interview.
Gauff started by acknowledging that it was a frustrating match on serve for her. However, she also emphasized the positive side of the rest of her game, being strong in the match, with Gauff feeling it was as good as when she crushed Elise Mertens in the last round.
The US Open champion then said she had been out on the practice courts working on her serve after the match. Gauff feels she would be doing herself a disservice if she did not do this after hitting 17 double faults.
Finally, Gauff described further what she felt she was doing well in Indian Wells. The American discussed how aggressive she was being, as well as mixing up the pace of her shots.
As ever, it was a thoughtful interview from Gauff, whose tennis IQ is clear for all to see.
