Coco Gauff accidentally struck doubles partner Jessica Pegula while serving during their doubles match at the 2023 Canadian Open.
After skipping the doubles event in Washington, Gauff and Pegula joined forces again on the doubles court, where they played their second-round match in Montreal against the team of Aldila Sutjiadi and Miyu Kato. The first set was evenly matched, and it was decided in a tiebreak.
At 3-4 in the breaker, Gauff was serving to level, when she hammered her first serve at a frenetic pace directly into her compatriot, who turned her back, waiting to take the next return shot. The crowd murmured and burst into laughter.
Their opponents were totally puzzled with their hands on mouths. Gauff quickly raised her hands up to apologize and retreated back to the baseline for a second serve. Thankfully, it didn't veer off course this time, and after a short exchange, Sutjiadi and Kato won the point to go up 5-3 and sealed the set a few points later.
"We’re a little rusty I guess."
But it didn't matter in the end as Gauff and Pegula masterminded a comeback to win the match 6-7, 6-1, 10-3 to book their spot in the quarterfinal. Both players are also in the singles draw, where they will play their first matches on Wednesday after a first-round bye.
Gauff took to X, formerly Twitter, with reacted to the video with the yellow-faced awkward emoji, to which Pegula responded sarcastically that they had rust-related issues. This comes just a week after the pair elected not to play doubles at the Citi Open.
Rumors circled on social media that their partnership as a doubles pair was coming to an end. Pegula at the time clarified it was a decision taken beforehand due to the weather, and it is their first tournament of an already-packed schedule in the US swing.
