Iga Swiatek can’t stop and won’t stop winning as the Polish player cruised past Jessica Pegula into the 2022 Roland Garros semi-finals.
There aren't many things that could be said about Swiatek that haven’t been said already. The Polish player is currently enjoying one of the most iconic runs in tennis history, having now won 33 matches in a row.
Her win over Pegula in the French capital is the 33rd win in a row for the Polish superstar this year. There is not much to add to that to make it more iconic than it is, but the more important part for her is that she won this match without too many problems.
Her previous two matches were somewhat shaky in comparison to the standards she set this year. This match, however, was right back to that dominant style that fans have come to know from her, especially on clay.
Pegula is a very solid player, a very consistent player, but she was no match for Swiatek, who needed 90 minutes to win the match, which was again a very good compliment to Pegula and what she’s capable of.
The young Pole started the match with a break and although she got broken back in the next game after losing 40-love lead, she worked towards her goal throughout the set and after converting two out of three breakpoints she later had, she won the first set 6-3.
Swiatek wasted some chances because after taking an early lead in that opener, she got broken immediately, which forced her to work even harder to win the set.
The second set, however, wasn’t as complicated for Swiatek because she was able to win it 6-2 to advance to the semi-final. The quality of the tennis decreased a bit from both players as Swiatek made more unforced errors than she hit winners, but ultimately, the result was what mattered to her.
In the semi-final, she will face Daria Kasatkina, who is a very solid player but unlikely to really challenge the Polish player who has now won 33 matches in a row. If Swiatek wins two more, she will conclude the French Open with 35 wins in a row and a Grand Slam trophy.
On the other hand, Pegula might enter Top 10 of the WTA Rankings for the first time in her career, unless Coco Gauff wins the 2022 Roland Garros by beating Daria Kasatkina in the final. In every other scenario, Pegula will become the Top 10 member.
