Emma Raducanu has been away from tennis for months, yet she's still one of the main talking points for many.
The fascination with Emma Raducanu has been quite interesting to observe. On one hand, you can understand it, especially after her sensational US Open win, but on the other hand, she's not been in the spotlight lately and generally prefers to stay out of it.
The British press is known to be ruthless, and as the first big talent out of the country since Andy Murray, Raducanu will always have the media's interest. Bad headlines sell better than good headlines, so it only makes sense that she's a very attractive topic of discussion at a time when her career is facing a lot of uncertainty.
She underwent triple surgery earlier this year and has yet to return to the courts, though we now know it will happen next year. Fans held out hope that she might make a return to the WTA Tour this year, but it's been confirmed by Raducanu herself that she won't be coming back until next year.
In the same interview with the BBC, Raducanu admitted that she finds it amusing that the media still keep talking about it even though her last event was the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix months ago.
The fact they are still talking about me even though I'm not at these events is just a compliment. Someone told me 'worry when they are not talking about you'.
We'll see what kind of narratives will follow Raducanu throughout the rest of 2023, especially after she announced that her comeback won't happen until 2024. She's back to practicing lately but mostly enjoys life away from the courts.
She's in China, though, not for tennis but rather to visit some relatives she hasn't seen in a while.
