Pegula Completes Another Majestic Comeback To Reach Adelaide Semifinals

| by Zachary Wimer

Jessica Pegula had to work really hard to beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, but she did advance to the semi-final of the Adelaide International.

Jessica Pegula has been a steady performer in Australia for many years and she's doing it yet again. The interesting thing about Pegula is that she does it at several events. In 2022 it was mostly at the Australian Open. A year later it was at the United Cup and the Australian Open.

This year, it's at the Adelaide International, showing how solid and consistent she is. She's been one of the most consistent in that regard, and that match actually came down to this. She was pretty solid for much of it, which is exactly how you beat streaky players like Pavlyuchenkova.

Pegul actually began with an early break, but she gave it back a few games later. After that, both stabilized well, and we ended up in a tiebreak which went to Pavlyuchenkova as she just played better to win 7-1. The second set was another very close one, but the Russian served a bit worse, which opened things up for the American.

It once again started with them trading early breaks, but this time around, Pegula outplayed her opponent towards the end of the 7-5 set. The final set featured heavy pressure from the Russian at times but Pegula handled it about as well as you can hope.

Even after giving her an early break, Pegula kept doing her thing and ultimately won the final set 6-4. It's just a pretty strong showing from the American, who is looking better this week than at the United Cup. She is peaking at the right time and will look to go to the final tomorrow.

She has never advanced past Adelaide's quarter-finals, so this is pretty exciting. The final score was 6-7(1) 7-5 6-4.
