Paula Badosa hasn't been active since Wimbledon and will remain inactive after withdrawing from the 2023 US Open and announcing a premature end to her season.
Badosa was born in New York over 25 years ago, and returning to the city is always an excellent memory. She likes to play at the US Open for apparent reasons, but that won't happen this year. Badosa has been dealing with injuries for much of this year.
It all started back in Australia, which caused her to miss the Australian Open. The problem also persisted through the clay season, with Badosa missing Roland Garros on top of other WTA events. She played at Wimbledon, but it didn't last long as she withdrew from her second-round match.
She hasn't played since then despite travelling to events and practising occasionally. The hope was that she would become ready for the US Open, but she didn't manage to and will now be missing the event. Not long after that news came down, Badosa released a statement confirming that she was also done for the season.
Hello everyone, I wanted to update you on my situation with the injury... After struggling for many months to return to competing, I am calling my season to an end. Those who know me are aware of how much I enjoy competing and how difficult it has been to make this decision. We have tried everything along with my team, but the pain is not allowing me to move forward...
It's a shocking development for Badosa, but perhaps it's for the better. The injury clearly needs time and pushing it hasn't created the desired outcome. It's unfortunate because she only played 27 matches this year, going 18-9.
Wimbledon was the only Grand Slam she played this year, and obviously made no finals on the WTA Tour in 2023, though she did reach one semi-final. The hope is to recover and return back to competing in 2024.
