Naomi Osaka's journey at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships is over, as she lost to Emma Navarro in two sets.
Osaka admitted that she was feeling quite good ahead of this year's Wimbledon, noting that she only needed a bit more luck to break through. It didn't quite go that way, even though she won her first-round match.
In the second match at SW19, she ran into Navarro, who is admittedly a very tricky matchup for her because she plays a style similar to Caroline Wozniacki's. She's very smart and defends really well, which is a problem for a player who likes to attack like Osaka.
She needed to be precise with her play to trouble her opponent in this matchup, but she couldn't do that very well this time around. The former World No. 1 hit many balls wide and simply ran into a superbly motivated Navarro, who played almost a perfect match.
The American hit the ball really well the entire match and missed very few balls, which left the four-time major winner with few chances. The first set was close because she lost her serve only once, but the second set wasn't very good.
Osaka completely lost focus early in the second set and fell behind 0-4, and from there, it wasn't really possible to come back. Navarro simply played too well to let that kind of advantage slip away.
The longer the match went on, the less focused Osaka was. She couldn't compete well in the second set, which was a shame, but she was simply outplayed by Navarro, who played one of the best matches she's ever played in her career, winning 6-4, 6-1.
