Naomi Osaka advanced to the second round of the 2022 Japan Open in Tokyo but certainly not in a way she wanted.
The 4-time Grand Slam champion is supported by an army of home fans and so when Daria Saville found out about her opponent during a draw ceremony, she reacted quite hilariously. However, her match against Naomi Osaka wasn't so hilarious as the Australian was forced to retire already after nine minutes of play.
Osaka started on her serve and won the first game of the match but that was almost everything that fans in Tokyo saw. Saville grabbed her left knee after one of the rallies and it was obvious that she was in some sort of discomfort.
The Japanese player quickly went over to comfort her opponent but as she struggled with ACL problems before, Saville has decided to retire from the match and take care of her health. Therefore, just after one game played and 9 minutes on court, Naomi Osaka advanced to the second round of the 2022 Japan Open in Tokyo.
