Leylah Fernandez vs Katerina Siniakova: 2023 Hong Kong Open - Preview & Prediction

| by Evita Mueller

Leylah Fernandez has a chance to win her first trophy in over a year, but the opponent is tough and won't give it away easily.

This is shaping up to be a really interesting matchup between two players who haven't had many chances to win a trophy on the WTA Tour in the most recent months.

Fernandez struggled to add any impressive results since her US Open run to the final two years ago but is seemingly finding her best tennis again.

The low bounce conditions at the 2023 Hong Kong Open work really well for her game, and she's produced some solid wins to advance to her first final in 18 months.

Her final opponent, Katerina Siniakova, doesn't mind these conditions either, as she downed some impressive names en route to the final as well. It's going to be a close one but a superb battle betwen two great players playing at a similar level right now.

Head-to-head:

We saw this matchup only once so far, and Fernandez won it. It happened last year at Roland Garros, and it was a surprisingly easy win for the Canadian who isn't known as the best clay player, certainly not as much as Siniakova.

Hard courts are a different matter and should favour her more though Siniakova is a battler and doesn't lose matches easily.

Prediction:

Fernandez is obviously the better player between the two and fits better on hard courts. Her lefty can be really tough to handle and will do a lot of damage in this matchup, but don't expect Siniakova to give up easily.

She's one of the most competitive players on Tour and has frustrated plenty of great players in the past. She's even turned around a couple of matches on grit alone, so that's something that Fernandez will need to find a solution for. I do think that she will because she problem-solved all week long.

Prediction: Leylah Fernandez to win in two sets.
