'I Wouldn't Be Here Without Serena And Venus': Osaka Credits Williams Sisters For 'Representation'

| by Zachary Wimer

Naomi Osaka was recently asked about representation in tennis, and she admitted that it's something hugely important to her because, without it, she wouldn't be in tennis.

For the Japanese player, having representation in the sports, and on the WTA Tour is very important. Representation matters a lot because it shows that achieving things on the biggest stage is possible for everyone.

That's why representation matters so much. In Osaka's case, it mattered a lot to see the Williams sisters do what they've been able to do, as she was inspired by both Serena Williams and Venus Williams to pick up a tennis racket.

Asked about representation in tennis recently at the 2024 Canadian Open in Toronto, where she lost in the second round to Elise Mertens, 3-6, 4-6, Osaka explained how and why representation matters to her.

"I think for me, representation is really important. I've thought that way since I was younger. I know I wouldn't be here without my role models, Serena and Venus. Just to, I guess, blaze that path for other kids is really cool."

Osaka on representation

It's part of why Osaka takes what she does with great responsibility. Being a child of a Haitian father and a Japanese mother allows her to be a role model to many people.

Her success in tennis aids in representing a person who might have a similar, unique background. This became more pronounced after she became a mother because now she wants to be the best possible role model.

"I was talking with someone about this the other day, but since becoming a mom I think the word ‘role model’ has always been heavy to me, but now it's like I'm looking at kids looking at me and saying that I'm their favorite player, and knowing that they have a parent behind them that's kind of trusting me with that is really huge."

"If I think about Shai, like, having a poster of a player, then I'm going to like do a lot of research on that person, so I really feel the trust and I think it definitely means a lot to me, so I try to pay it back."

The best way for her to achieve her goals is to get back to the top, even though it has been a slow process for her. Osaka has looked great on the court at times this year, but she hasn't come close to her best tennis yet.

Still, she seems motivated and works hard, and that is the most important thing. The more she plays, the more likely she is to return to her best.
