French Open champion Iga Swiatek's form in the last few months has been incredible, and understandably, she wants to take some time to rest after her triumph in Paris.
Swiatek's victory in the final at Roland-Garros was her 35th straight match win. That streak's mental and physical toll is undoubtedly very high, meaning a break is necessary for the two-time Grand Slam winner.
The world No. 1 has also played more matches than any other player this year. Her triumph against Coco Gauff to claim her second French Open title was her 47th contest of the season.
Admittedly, the grass court season before Wimbledon is also the most natural time of the year for Swiatek to take a break. The Pole is least comfortable playing on grass, meaning she may feel her chances of success are weaker than at other times of the season.
However, that does not mean Swiatek will be making no effort on grass. The Pole intends to practice on grass after taking a break and is also looking forward to finally having lower expectations of her.
"My coach believes I can win more matches on grass, I don’t know about that yet. Grass is always tricky. I actually like the part that I have no expectations. It’s refreshing. I want to stay at least a week at home. We have some grass courts, like two probably, maybe an hour and a half from Warsaw."
It is easy to forget that Swiatek won the 2018 Girls' singles title at Wimbledon. Although grass is now her least favourite surface, winning the girls' title is impossible without some natural talent on the surface.
Despite this, Swiatek is still unsure whether she is ready to win more matches on grass as a professional career. Observing whether she can improve this year at SW19 will be fascinating.
