After several attempts to win a Grand Slam doubles trophy, Coco Gauff finally got one when she and Katerina Siniakova bested Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini at the 2024 Roland Garros.
Gauff admitted ahead of the final that she would like to win a doubles Grand Slam trophy because she won't be playing as many doubles moving forward, so getting that nice milestone would be a nice way to conclude her very successful doubles career.
She had a great teammate who had already done that before, and they proved to be quite formidable this week, winning matches comfortably. This whole run was interesting for the 20-year-old because she had no intentions of playing doubles this year but then, she changed her mind.
With the final win, she certainly won't regret doing it because she has her first Grand Slam doubles trophy. The match was a very tricky one because Errani and Paolini proved quite tough, having won the Italian Open recently.
A combination of good hitting from Paolini and smart play by Errani is just tough to handle. Gauff and Siniakova struggled greatly in the final match despite their great credentials.
They were up a break twice early on but didn't hold either time. The opening set ended up in a tie-break, and they trailed initially but pulled it out with some really solid play.
The second set opened a bit better for them. They broke early to take a 2-0 lead, but the Italians weren't going to give up, and they broke back. It didn't matter because they were broken once more to fall behind 1-4.
Siniakova and Gauff found all the solutions flying around the court with ease. Ultimately, it's a matchup that doesn't work that well for Paolini and Errani, and we saw that the longer the match went on. The final score ended up being 7-6(5), 6-3 for Gauff and Siniakova, as the American won her first major doubles trophy.
