Gauff 'Not Serena, But She Can Win Some Grand Slams' Says Williams' Former Coach

| by Sebastian Dahlman

Coco Gauff won her maiden Grand Slam trophy this year, and according to the former coach of Serena Williams, Rick Macci, she'll win more in the future, but she's not Serena Williams.

Serena Williams is the greatest female tennis player of all time, so not being able to match that isn't such a huge surprise. Gauff doesn't even have to do it to become a legendary player in her own right and she certainly has the tools to do so.

We've seen what the best of Gauff can be earlier this year, and the scary thing is that that's not even her peak. She can and will become much better in the future, but the US Open run already proved she's one of the best players on the WTA Tour right now.

According to Macci, who talked on the Match Point Canada podcast, she's not on the level of Serena Williams but she'll certainly win more Grand Slams in the future.

Coco, the best female athlete on the tour. She’s an Olympic sprinter with a racquet in her hand. The forehand’s a little dodgy. I know she kinda covered it up during the summer, but there’s a little bump there.

But when you are confident, as you know, you don’t see it as much. But maybe, when you have the people change the pace, you’re not as confident. So, she’s not Serena, but she can win some Grand Slams.

We'll see what happens during the offseason, as she's already begun it. The forehand, as Macci mentioned, can be a bit dodgy, but she can fix it with the right approach.

There was even talk that Macci himself could be hired to help out with that, but for now, she seems content with Gilbert, who in turn, isn't bothered by the forehand that much. The new season is closer by the day, so we'll find out soon enough.
