Coco Gauff battled Caroline Wozniacki in the 4th round of the US Open, and it was a much closer match than anybody anticipated.
The fact that Wozniacki troubled Gauff shouldn't have been surprising to many people, yet it seemingly was. Gauff has been spectacular recently, but she's still quite a bit behind Wozniacki in terms of experience.
The Dane actually held an early break in the final set, but it proved a false alarm. Gauff went on to win six games in a row and finish off the match in stellar fashion to book a quarter-final. There was tension, though; it looked smooth, but it was far from smooth, as the American showed some indecisiveness at times.
After the match, Gauff admitted that she disregarded the advice of Brad Gilbert, who was telling her to play longer points. She opted to keep the rallies short and continue to play the aggressive style, which has been her signature since recently.
Yeah, I think it's based off the feeling in the match. The longer points, I definitely agree that playing longer points is to my advantage. But I felt in that moment, play playing Caroline, watching her play so many years, that of you making errors.
I think he was really trying to tell me to go for less, but also at the same time I watched her play so many years. I didn't want to play into that game where I was not pushing but not playing the game that I like to play.
It ultimately worked out in her favour, which is a confidence booster. Tennis is a game of instincts, and you are alone on the court, having to solve problems in real-time. She did that against Wozniacki and hopes to keep doing that in pursuit of the trophy at Flushing Meadows.
