Coco Gauff is about to conquer Roland Garros as she remains in the hunt for two titles at the tournament.
Yes, that's right. Gauff reached her first Grand Slam singles and doubles finals at this year's French Open, emulating Barbora Krejcikova, who achieved this feat just 12 months ago.
The Czech famously won the double last year (hat-trick if you include the Strasbourg Open). She sensationally won the singles edition with a victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and teamed up with countrywoman Katerina Siniakova to lift the women's doubles title.
And now the 18-year-old American sensation is on the verge of something very special herself after dismantling the surprise package of the tournament Martina Trevisan in Thursday's semifinal.
Gauff was back on the court just 24 hours later to advance into the doubles final with fellow American Jessica Pegula after defeating the duo of Madison Keys and Taylor Townsend.
It's been a dream fortnight for the young American so far. In singles, she's yet to drop a set as she will play her maiden Grand Slam final against Poland's Iga Swiatek, who won the event back in 2020. The odds are stacked against Gauff, but tennis outcomes can veer from the predictable.
In doubles, Gauff and Pegula dropped only one set on their way to the final, and that teenage hype that followed her after Wimbledon debut in 2015 is now a reality. If she wins both events, she will become the new World No. 8 in the singles rankings and World No. 3 in doubles.
After Gauff reached the semifinals in both singles and doubles, her doubles partner, Jessica Pegula, immediately knew what was to come when she hinted that her younger colleague might win both event and complete a clean sweep.
"I told her, ‘Freaking semis in singles and doubles, we need the final of both, then go for the sweep’. That would be awesome. She loves clay, not surprised that she's in the semis. I'm sure she really wants to at least get to the final and win this next match."
