Emma Raducanu was supposed to be one of the players headlining the inaugural ATX Open in Austin, but she can't participate because of an injury.
The season started well for the 2021 US Open champion when she kicked off with a win over 17-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova in Auckland. However, in her very next match, Raducanu had to retire because of an injury.
Despite this setback, she still made it to Melbourne for the Australian Open but lost in the second round to Coco Gauff. Then, Raducanu signed up for the 2023 ATX Open in Austin, which is a new WTA event in the calendar, but she won't be able to compete in the United States.
The British no. 1 revealed that she currently struggles with tonsillitis and that's the reason why she withdrew from the event and doesn't appear in the draw.
"I'm sorry to have to withdraw from the ATX Open. I am currently suffering from tonsillitis and am unable to compete this week. Thank you to the tournament and the great hospitality here in Austin."
Raducanu will certainly want to recover in time for the upcoming Sunshine Double, as she received a wild card for the 2023 BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells, which starts on March 8th.
