Emma Raducanu bested Shelby Rogers once at the Grand Slam level and ended up winning the event, so can she do both again at the 2024 Australian Open?
It's been more than two years since Emma Raducanu won the 2021 US Open, and she's yet to really find that level again. In fairness, she spent very little time actually playing tennis during that time because she's been injured for a good part of it.
Much of last year was spent on the sidelines due to injuries, but she's back as of recently. Her first match back was a win, and that was great to see, even if she lost in her next match. Raducanu played twice at the Australian Open, making the second round both times.
It's a court that can work well for her, but we'll see if she's had enough time to practice due to the obvious lack of matches. Her opponent is a player who made the fourth round a few years ago but generally doesn't impress all that much Down Under.
Raducanu and Rogers played once in the past, during Raducanu's 2021 US Open run. The Brit destroyed the American 6-2 6-1 then, and there is a very good chance that it won't happen again.
Raducanu might well win and is heavily favored as the American is yet to play this year, but the 21-year-old is nowhere near her 2021 level.
It remains to be seen whether she ever reaches that level again. Plenty believe she has the tools, but there is more than just talent to it.
When it comes to this match, then the Brit should have enough to win. She's the better baseline hitter, and that's all she really needs to win this matchup. It's a fast court, so whoever imposes themselves from the baseline better will generally win.
Prediction: Emma Raducanu to win in three sets.
