Coco Gauff saw her US Open semi-final match against Karolina Muchova interrupted by climate protesters, but she supports the cause.
Coco Gauff was taking on Karolina Muchova in the US Open semi-final and bested the Czech player in two sets, but her match was paused due to protesters. The players had to go back to the locker room and wait there until the commotion was settled, but even so, the American wasn't mad about it.
Speaking after the match, Gauff obviously admitted that she would have preferred not to have her match interrupted. Still, she believes in climate change and supports initiatives to raise awareness. Not all methods are to be condoned, but she accepted it for what it is.
Yeah, I mean, I think that throughout definitely definitely, I believe, you know, in climate change. I don't really know exactly what, you know, what they were protesting. I know it was about the environment.
I 100% believe in that. I think there are things we can do better. I know the tournaments are doing things to do in my match? 100%, yeah. I'm not gonna sit here and lie (smiling). But it is what it is.
The crowd wasn't very sympathetic, as the 50-minute wait wasn't really planned. Gauff, on the other hand, isn't mad about it, but it did come at a tricky point in the match where she hoped to keep the momentum going. In the end, she won, so there was little harm done to her personally.
I always speak about preaching, you know, preaching about what you feel and what you believe in. It was done in a peaceful way, so I can't get too mad at it. Obviously I don't want it to happen when I'm winning up 6-4, 1-0, and I wanted the momentum to keep going. But hey, if that's what they felt they needed to do to get their voices heard, I can't really get upset at it.
