Different Venue Same Result As Gauff Loses To Potapova Again

It seems that Coco Gauff found an opponent that can play really well again her as Anastasia Potapova eliminated her out of the 2023 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.

Only a few weeks ago, the two met in Miami when Potapova defeated the American in three sets to record the first win against the teenager in their H2H on the WTA Tour. Now, they met once again but for the first time, their match took place on clay as they battled at the WTA 500 event in Stuttgart.

In the first round, Gauff had to navigate a very difficult three-set battle against Veronika Kudermetova that was decided in a third-set tie-break, which the teenager won, also thanks to her experience from the doubles.

The American entered the match perfectly as she had five break points in the first three games, but using her chances was something that she struggled with. On the other hand, Potapova converted already her second break point to lead 4-1 in the first set. The Russian then increased the lead even further as she won the first set 6-2 in just 38 minutes.

Gauff needed a comeback and she could have kick-started her journey with a break in the first game of the second set. Once again, the American no. 2 had a chance to break, but she couldn't and the same story followed.

Potapova got the first break of the set and since she controlled the remainder of it, she had no problems winning the match 6-2, 6-3 in an hour and 18 minutes to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2023 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. After the match, she said:

"It was actually a tough match, mentally and physically as well, even though the score is not 3 sets like it was in Miami. I just really like the clay. Especially indoors. I think it’s my favorite combo. I’m very happy to get this win."
