Bouchard Takes Dig At 'Dopers' Sharapova & Yastremska

Eugenie Bouchard made an interesting remark about Maria Sharapova and Dayana Yastremska in a tweet following her latest win at the 2023 Madrid Open.

The Canadian made waves on social media, not only for her impressive performance at the 2023 Madrid Open, in her first appearance at the event since 2017, but also for taking a subtle jab at Maria Sharapova and Dayana Yastremska.

After a stunning comeback victory against Yastremska, Bouchard, who previously said that she feels like starting her career again from zero, posted a tweet that seemed to reference both players' past doping scandals.

Bouchard's controversial tweet followed her first-round win against Yastremska, which saw her bounce back from a set down to secure a 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-2 victory. The Canadian's tweet, which read, "There's something about playing dopers in Madrid," was quickly interpreted as a nod to Yastremska's 2021 doping scandal, as well as a throwback to her 2017 encounter with Maria Sharapova.

The Ukrainian player Yastremska found herself in hot water in 2021 after testing positive for a banned substance, mesterolone. However, her suspension was ultimately lifted by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) due to a lack of fault on her part. Meanwhile, Sharapova had served a 15-month doping ban before her 2017 face-off with Bouchard at the Madrid Open.

It's worth noting that Bouchard has been vocal in the past about her disapproval of players with doping histories competing on the WTA Tour.

Although she later deleted the tweet, she didn't delete another one where she responded to one of the fans stating: "Genie Bouchard is now 2-0 vs. players with a doping ban in Madrid." The Canadian replied: "Just trying to do my part," along with a laughing emoji.
