The 2023 Palermo Open is one of the first two WTA clay-court tournaments after Wimbledon, and the entry list shows that.
Running from July 17th to 23rd, the WTA 250 tournament in the Italian city of Palermo, also called the Palermo Ladies Open or Internazionali Femminili di Palermo, will offer players a chance to play on the clay courts before shifting to hard again.
Clay-court specialists often look for tournaments on their favorite surface, and one day after the conclusion of the Wimbledon Championships, they will have a chance to attend one such, as the Palermo Open is the first clay-court event after the grass-court Grand Slam.
In 2022, Irina-Camelia Begu won the title and many great players will try to replace her as a champion, as the Romanian won't compete in 2023. The top seed for the tournament should be Daria Kasatkina, who was recently vocal about the length of changeovers.
She is the highest-ranked player on the initial entry list, but Elina Svitolina, who has experience with being in the Top 10, and has recently won her first title as a mother, will try to challenge her.
There will also be many dangerous players, especially on the red dirt and in front of the home fans, such as Elisabetta Cocciaretto, Jasmine Paolini, Lucia Bronzetti, and Sara Errani.
Also the likes of Ajla Tomljanovic, Alycia Parks, and Emma Navarro should be considered, as with only one Top 30 player on the entry list, anyone can surprise with a title run in the Italian city.
