The 2022 San Diego Open features the strongest draw at the WTA 500 of the whole season as multiple Grand Slam champions will gather in the Unites States from October 10th until 16th.
The WTA 500 event returns to San Diego for the first time since 2010, when Svetlana Kuznetsova won the previous edition of the competition over Agnieszka Radwanska. The list of former winners includes Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova, Steffi Graf, Billie Jean King, and many more famous players. In 2022, the San Diego Open offers a star-studded draw as players couldn't wait to compete at this prestigious event.
World number one, Iga Swiatek leads the draw and as all top four seeded player, she has a BYE in the first round. But her journey to the title won't be easy as already in the second round she will meet a Grand Slam champion. The young Pole will take on winner of the match between this year's Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina or former world no. 1 and two-time Grand Slam champion, Garbine Muguruza.
Another major winner may meet world no. 1 in the quarterfinals. Bianca Andreescu is set to take on Beatriz Haddad Maia as the winner will play against the 2022 Roland Garros finalist and former doubles world no. 1, Coco Gauff or a qualifier.
The second quarter of the draw will be one to watch for American fans. No. 4 in San Diego, Jessica Pegula will meet Coco Vandeweghe or another Grand Slam champion in the draw, Sofia Kenin in the second round.
Moreover, Madison Keys will play against one of the qualifiers as winner of this match will play against 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez or the eighth-seeded Daria Kasatkina.
Maria Sakkari and Karolina Pliskova will both begin against qualifiers as they can meet in the second round and the third-seeded Aryna Sabalenka will start her tournament against winner of the match between Sloane Stephens and Veronika Kudermetova.
Paula Badosa is the second-seeded at the 2022 San Diego Open and the Spanish player will play against Alison Riske or a qualifier in the second round. The seventh-seeded Caroline Garcia will begin against another home player, Danielle Collins.
