The 2022 Berlin Open will run from June 13th to 19th, and details of prize money have been revealed.
This tournament is categorized as a WTA 500 and will be played on the grass in the build-up to Wimbledon. It was not part of the Tour for more than a decade before it was re-introduced in 2021.
Liudmila Samsonova was crowned champion after beating Belinda Bencic in the final. This year, the field is even stronger and boasts the highest-ranked trio of Ons Jabeur, Maria Sakkari, and Aryna Sabalenka.
Big-serving Czech Karolina Pliskova also features, while Garbine Muguruza, a former Wimbledon champion, will show what she is made of on grass.
Samsonova will return to defend her title, while Bencic will look to go one better this time. Daria Kasatkina, Coco Gauff, and Veronika Kudermetova will also play in Berlin.
Iga Swiatek, Anett Kontaveit, Paula Badosa, Jessica Pegula, and Danielle Collins have all withdrawn and will not be competing in Berlin this year. This opens up a lot of opportunities for young players like Bianca Andreescu and Qinwen Zheng to showcase their talent on the grass.
The total prize money for this year's edition is $757,900. The champion in Berlin will earn $93,823 and 470 points. The beaten finalist will receive $58,032 and 305 points.
Prize money will be distributed from the first round. Players who take a loss at this stage will pocket $5,390 but only get 1 point. Second-rounders will make $8,262 and receive 55 points.
