Tennis Umpire Suspended For Life After Manipulating Scoring

| by Zachary Wimer

Fabián Carrero, a tennis umpire from the Dominican Republic, has been issued a lifetime ban from the sport.

The ban comes after his involvement in a match-fixing scandal that dates back to 2019. Carrero was found guilty of manipulating the scoring system in eight matches across tournaments held in the Dominican Republic in November and December 2019.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) revealed in a statement that Carrero had committed 16 breaches of the sport's anti-corruption program. By tampering with a handheld device used to record match scores, Carrero ensured that specific points resulted in guaranteed betting wins.

This manipulation undermined the integrity of the sport and according to ITIA's statement, the official breached two clauses.

“No Covered Person shall, directly or indirectly, contrive, attempt to contrive, agree to contrive, or conspire to contrive the outcome, or any other aspect, of any Event.”

D.1.d

“In the event any Related Person or Tournament Support Person is approached by any person who offers or provides any type of money, benefit or Consideration to a Related Person or Tournament Support Person to (i) influence or attempt to influence the outcome of any aspect of any Event, or (ii) provide Inside Information, it shall be the Related Person’s or Tournament Support Person’s obligation to report such incident to the TIU [now ITIA] as soon as possible.”

D.2.b.i

Fabián Carrero has been under suspension since March of the previous year while the case proceeded. With the conclusive evidence presented, he now faces a lifetime ban that prevents him from officiating or attending any events organized by tennis governing bodies.

This scandal serves as a stark reminder of the potential corruption that can infiltrate any sport, including the world of tennis. It also highlights the importance of the role played by the ITIA and other governing bodies in maintaining the integrity of the game and ensuring that all participants adhere to the highest ethical standards.
