During the 2022 Wimbledon final ceremony, Nick Kyrgios broke the strict dress code and wore a red hat as he was handed a trophy.
Already before the tournament, Nick Kyrgios was asked about the all-white Wimbledon dress code and provided an answer which seemed to go unnoticed. During the tournament, another Australian player, Daria Saville also spoke about the all-white dress code and women's struggles with it. As the 27-years-old Australian progressed at the tournament, he tried to fight the tradition and suggest to the officials that they might reconsider the rules.
When asked about the all-white dress code before the tournament, the Aussie answered:
"I always wanna wear all black, obviously. I don't think it's something that it's going to change. I think it would be cool to allow a black headband or black sweatpants. I think it would look cool, but obviously Wimbledon doesn't really care what looks cool. So, yeah, I don't know. I don't think it will ever change."
Then, he wore red shoes and red hat during one of his earlier matches and got asked about it after the match, when he said:
"Because I do what I want. I’m not above the rules. Well, I just like wearing my Jordans. I’ll wear some Triple Whites tomorrow. But nobody else, even after Wimbledon, no-one else really walks with Jordans on the court."
After the final, Kyrgios put on the red hat once again and he wasn't asked about it after the event anymore. The tournament is yet to give any statement if the Australian will be punished or if his attempts to change the strict dress code were successful.
