At the US Open, Frances Tiafoe just needed one more set to make history, but the American was unable to defeat Alcaraz.
Although Tiafoe prevailed over Alcaraz in the opening set of their semifinal match, Alcaraz easily won the second and third sets. The World No. 26 roared back into form to win the fourth set in a tiebreaker spectacularly saving one match point along the way.
However, the fifth set was very uneventful thanks to an early double break from Alcaraz, who essentially wrapped up the match in his favour. Since Tiafoe was the home favourite, the announcers were able to break with precedent and let him address the crowd instead of just the match's winner.
"I gave everything I had. Too good from Carlos tonight, but I gave everything I had in the last two weeks. Obviously, I came here wanting to win the US Open, I feel like I let you guys down. This one really hurts. This one really, really hurts." - said an emotional Tiafoe adding:
"Man, you're going to win a lot of Grand Slams. You are a hell of a player, a hell of a person. I am happy I got to share the court on such a big stage with you. I am going to come back and I will win this thing one day. Sorry guys"
