Thanasi Kokkinakis is one of the most talented players on the ATP Tour but he often couldn't show his A game due to different injuries and inconsistency.
For years, fans have watched him struggle with injuries and inconsistency, and wondered if he would ever reach his potential. But now, in 2023, it seems that Kokkinakis is finally breaking through. He's played well in several tournaments this year, and now he's only one step away from reaching the main draw of the 2023 Indian Wells BNP Paribas Open.
Kokkinakis has had a rollercoaster of a year so far. He started off strong, making it to the semifinals in Adelaide. But then, in the second round of the Australian Open, he suffered a painful loss to Andy Murray.
It was a setback, but Kokkinakis didn't let it slow him down. He went on to win the ATP Challenger in Bahrain and then played well in Dubai, where he lost in the second round after a grueling three-hour battle.
Now, the Australian is in Indian Wells, competing in the qualifying rounds. In the first round, he faced off against Yuichi Sugita and won in straight sets. And in the second round, he'll be facing the 13th-seeded Matteo Arnaldi. If he can win this match, he'll qualify for the main draw of the tournament.
The 2022 Australian Open doubles champion was impressive against Sugita from start to finish. He hit 11 aces and 37 winners while making only 16 unforced errors. After an hour and 34 minutes of play, Kokkinakis advanced to the final of the qualifying, winning 7-6(5), 6-3.
For Kokkinakis, this is a crucial moment. He's currently ranked 94th in the world, but if he can make it to the main draw of Indian Wells, he'll have a chance to climb the rankings even higher. His previous career high was 69th, but with his recent success, there's no telling how far he could go.
