Jannik Sinner might have set the ATP Tour on fire in recent weeks, but he's not expecting much for his 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters stay.
Sinner has been a tremendous performer in Monte-Carlo over the years, making deep runs most of the time he played. He's familiar with the surroundings as he's lived in Monaco for a while now, and the stands are packed with Italian fans on most days.
That creates an atmosphere that makes him and other Italians feel at home, and they do really well. Lorenzo Musetti outplayed Taylor Fritz easily, so many expect Sinner to have a good run, especially with how he's played recently.
Still, he's not so optimistic about that, as he told reporters on Sunday that expectations are fairly low for the start of the clay season. The Italian admitted that the goal is to be ready for Roland Garros and the Olympics, not thinking about the season's first ATP Masters 1000 tournament.
"The expectations are are not that high for this for this beginning of clay. The goal is to be ready for Rolanda Garros and then hopefully Olympics. This is…I guess for all all the players the goal, to try to be in top form there."
Obviously, Sinner isn't going to play below his level purposefully, especially in the Italian Open, which is his home tournament. He'll do his best, but this week will be like a practice week for the Italian, who hopes to play at least a few matches before getting up to speed.
"We will we will take this this week as a practice week, playing with matches hopefully, hopefully more than one match but you know, it’s it’s gonna be interesting to see. I’m just happy to be here. It’s a special tournament and hopefully I can perform in in a good way."
