Stefanos Tsitsipas becomes first player in last 5 years to win a trophy on all three surfaces

| by Erik Virostko

Stefanos Tsitsipas won the 2022 Mallorca Championships, and it was his maiden grass title, making him the latest player to have won a trophy on all surfaces.

Winning on all surfaces proves the versatility of a tennis player, and it's not surprising that not many tennis players managed to win a title on all three surfaces in their careers.

In fact, it's been five years since someone completed their collection before the 2022 Mallorca Championships, as France's Lucas Pouille was the last player to do so.

Over the years, many players from the upcoming generation got close to it, but neither managed to do it, until Tsitsipas won the 2022 Mallorca Championships by beating Robert Bautista Agut in the final match.

The Greek tennis player has won on hard courts and clay courts in the past, but he has never won a trophy on grass until playing at the ATP 250 event in Mallorca. This was also his maiden final on the surface.

He came close in Stuttgart earlier this year but was beaten by Andy Murray in the semi-final. Now, in a final, Tsitsipas overcame a spirited effort from Bautista Agut to win the trophy.

Contrary to popular belief, not many active players have done that, and quite a few high-profile names have never done it. For example, Daniil Medvedev won titles on both hard and grass courts, but he couldn't do it on clay, his least preferred surface.

Due to the low number of grass-court tournaments in the calendar, plenty of players miss a title on the green surface. Some of them are Alexander Zverev, Andrey Rublev, Cameron Norrie, and Gael Monfils.

It's expected that all of them will likely join Tsitsipas in the future, but for now, the Greek player is the one who ended a five-year wait for someone to win a title on all three surfaces.
