Jannik Sinner had a pretty tricky draw by getting Thanasi Kokkinakis in the second round at the 2024 Indian Wells Open, but he handled it well.
The Italian arrived in Indian Wells with a 12-0 record this year, and he extended his unbeaten record by comfortably beating Kokkinakis. We can't really say that it's surprising because Sinner has bested Kokkinakis easily in the past as well, and this version of the Italian is the best we've ever seen.
He's played amazing tennis all year long, and his opening match of the ATP Masters 1000 event in Indian Wells was much of the same. The start was a bit slower, but that's mostly because he needed some time to find his rhythm, while Kokkinakis was also doing a pretty solid job of keeping himself afloat.
Sinner's first break came at 4-3, but he made it 5-3 and easily cruised to a 6-3 finish. Kokkinakis' problem was mostly that he had to win the point against Sinner. He got a few free points with the serve, but eventually, he had to outplay his opponent from the baseline, and that did not happen.
The Italian was marvelous, finishing the opening set with nine winners and only one unforced error. He was even better in the second set, jumping out to an early break this time around.
He would add another break for the 5-0 lead. The Australian didn't serve as well in the second and missed more, too. That was more than enough for Sinner to cruise, though he was no less impressive himself.
He finished the match with a bagel, and the final score was 6-3 ,6-0. He had three aces, 13 winners, and only one unforced error. It doesn't really get any better than that, as he confirmed that he's playing the best tennis right now.
