Jannik Sinner joked with Daniil Medvedev about the Russian's clay-court abilities during the 2023 Miami Open trophy ceremony.
Sinner and Medvedev battled it out for the second time in a final this year and once again it was the Russian that prevailed in two sets. The Italian is now 0-6 against Medvedev but he was very complimentary of his opponent during the trophy ceremony praising him for another excellent event.
First of all, Congrats Daniil, not only for this tournament but also the last five, minimum final, and playing incredible tennis. Congrats to you and obviously your team for an incredible job.
Sinner also proved that he's got some joke as he playfully teased Medvedev for his clay prowess which isn't the best. Even Medvedev pokes fun at his dislike for clay tennis and Sinner played in on that joke wishing him the best in the next part of the season.
Now clay season starts, let's see how you do there, but I wish you all the best.
Just recently Medvedev made fun of himself by pointing out how poor his clay record is. He said it was a pity clay is coming up because he doesn't anticipate his high level to persist once we make the switch to the red dirt.
It's a pity it is clay season next up, but I am going to try. I am really happy with my results so far but it is not over.
The victory in Miami allowed Medvedev to solidify his position in the latest edition of the ATP Rankings as he is back up to number 4 after spending some weeks outside of the top 10. Sinner also improved his position in the rankings sitting at number 9 currently.
