After getting to the China Open final, Daniil Medvedev is out of the 2023 Shanghai Masters, getting stunned by Sebastian Korda.
Daniil Medvedev is one of the best hard courts players in the world but he didn't have the best time in Shanghai. Beijing was a decent event for him as he played amazing all week long making the final but he was beaten by Jannik Sinner in two sets.
The Russian made the quick trip to Shanghai for the ATP Masters 1000 but could not replicate the same level.
He vented his frustrations with the conditions after the first match, calling them 'slow', which is more due to the balls than the court. It didn't matter as much for Korda, who came to Shanghai from Astana, which is a known slow court.
The American made the final in Astana and was a break and set up against Mannarino, only to botch it in the end. He didn't do that in this match, as he actually stunned Medvedev, just like he did earlier this year in Australia.
The opening set was a very close one, as neither player allowed much on the serve. We didn't see a single break point, but we did see mini-breaks in the tiebreaks. Medvedev was spectacular on his serve and yet failed to win it as Korda pulled away 10-8.
It was a very frustrating thing for Medvedev, who did his thing by sort of mailing in the match in the second set. He was more impatient, he missed more, and once Korda broke, it was pretty much evident that he was going to win this match.
He ultimately did, with the final score being 7-6(8) 6-2. Korda was spectacular, blasting three times as many winners as Medvedev in the win. The crucial part was avoiding giving Medvedev chances as the Russian had only one break point.
