Casper Ruud won't win a title at the Sunshine Double in 2024, as he was eliminated from the Miami Open by Nicolas Jarry.
The Norwegian made it to the quarter-finals of the Indian Wells, where he lost to Tommy Paul, who was playing some really inspired tennis at the first ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the season.
Moving to the second tournament of the Sunshine Double, Ruud managed to keep his level quite high, even though he wasn't happy with the organization and voiced his displeasure.
But once again, he ran into an inspired opponent, as Jarry, who needed three sets to win his first two matches at the event, was too strong to overcome for the Norwegian.
The Chilean started the match with a break, but it wouldn't be enough to win the opening set, as Ruud was able to break back, and save one more break point on top of that, to forced the tie-break in the first set.
Still, the former world no. 2 didn't play well enough in the tie-break, as Jarry managed to turn a 2-3 deficit into a 7-3 win and a one-set lead in this fourth round match.
Ruud struggled in the second set early on, facing two break points in the fourth game. He saved both, but couldn't do the same thing in the sixth game, when the Chilean gained a set and a break advantage.
A player with such a powerful serve as Jarry shouldn't lose such a big lead, and he didn't. The 22nd seed stayed calm in the important moments, and he easily served out the match.
Jarry was able to win 7-6(3), 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals of the 2024 Miami Open, taking on the defending champion at the event, Daniil Medvedev, who outplayed Dominik Koepfer in a simultaneously played match.
