For years to come, Holger Rune will surely be the highest-ranked Dane on the ATP Tour, and he will try to use his talent to help his country also in team competitions.
At the 2023 Davis Cup, Denmark didn't qualify for the qualifiers, but they played only the World Group 1 Play-Offs. Despite facing India, which doesn't have many high-ranked players, Rune signed up to help his country, similar to Stefanos Tsitsipas, who represents his country against Ecuador.
On Friday, Rune comfortably defeated Yuki Bhambri, winning 6-2, 6-2 in only 58 minutes. Then, August Holmgren couldn't take advantage of his good start against Sumit Nagal, and lost the match 6-4, 3-6, 4-6 as the tie was tied at 1-1 after day 1.
On Saturday, the action started with a double match. Rune, who doesn't play many doubles matches on the ATP Tour, teamed up with Johannes Ingildsen to play against Yuki Bhambri and experienced doubles player, Rohan Bopanna. Danish duo was successful in this match, winning it 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 5 minutes.
Because of his singles and doubles wins, Rune gave his country and himself a match point. The young Dane took on Sumit Nagal, and he was perfect again, winning the match 7-5, 6-3 in an hour and 37 minutes and securing his country a 3-1 win over India.
