Medvedev Bests Long-Time Rival Tsitsipas In Vienna Open Semifinal

| by Evita Mueller

Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas played a pretty interesting match at the 2023 Vienna Open that ultimately went the way of Medvedev.

If you read our preview of the match, you'd know that this result was quite expected and not shocking at all. There are a few reasons why Medvedev generally comes out on top of Tsitsipas, and it's mostly due to the lack of weapons from the Greek player.

He has weapons, but you need something extra to take down Medvedev, and more often than not, Tsitsipas simply doesn't have it, at least not in the most crucial moments. Today was much of the same but not quite.

He did find some really good solutions against Medvedev, but the crucial rallies never went his way. For example, the opening set saw five break points in total.

Three of them happened on the serve of the Russian, but Tsitsipas didn't convert either. Medvedev had two and converted one of those, which literally was the difference in the set.

Both dominated on the first serve, but Tsitsipas hit it only 50 % of the time, which also didn't help. He outplayed the Russian with nine winners and only two unforced errors, both better marks than Medvedev's, but missed chances undid him.

The second set was amazing from both players, though Medvedev was the one that wasted chances this time around. By the time the scoreboard showed 4-4, he wasted two break points while Tsitsipas didn't see a single one.

Eventually, we ended up in the tiebreak, which was a closely contested one as the score was 6-6 after 12 points. A big forehand miss by Tsitsipas gave Medvedev the match point, and another one sealed the win for the Russian. The final score was 6-3 7-6(6) as he moved on to the final, awaiting either Jannik Sinner or Andrey Rublev.
