Matteo Berrettini had a terrible season in terms of injuries and it prevented him also from playing the last two ATP events that he enrolled for.
The 26-years-old Italian finished in Top 10 of the ATP Rankings every time since 2019, but this year he won't be able to extend his streak. Matteo Berrettini played his first Grand Slam final last year when he lost to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon and he wanted to continue in a similar style also in 2022.
Yet, he was stopped by a series of injuries that kept him away from courts for a big part of the season. Once he returned during a grass-court season, he lifted two back-to-back titles, but only a few weeks later, he struggled with an injury at ATP 250 event in his home country.
During the 2022 Napoli Cup, the Italian played a difficult semifinal match in which he was told to retire by his team, but he fought and explained his reasons afterwards: “I don’t even know how I did it,” Berrettini said. “I wasn’t feeling very good. I asked for the physio because my foot was hurting."
"It happened so many times in my career that I had to fight through so many things, not just thinking about the tennis ball. I didn’t want to retire, I'm sick of retiring. My team told me ‘I think you should stop’. But I tried and I found a way.”
However, subsequently Berrettini was forced to retire from the Vienna Open and it seems that his season may now be over as he also withdrew from the Paris Masters. He's still set to compete at the Davis Cup Finals, but he may withdraw also from that event to properly recover from his injury.
