The first big clay-court tournament on the road to Roland Garros begins with the Monte-Carlo Masters.
The 2024 edition of this prestigious tournament needs no introduction. The ATP's cream of the crop will be parading in Monaco from April 7th to 14th. This is the first Masters tournament of the season to be played on clay courts.
It has been dominated by one man in the past two decades. Former World No. 1 Rafael Nadal is an 11-time champion at the event and has put everyone on notice that he is returning to add to his collection. In this article, you shall find all the relevant information for the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters.
Tennis fans will clasp their hands in anticipation of this tournament, which begins on Monday, April 7th, with some first-round matches and culminates with the singles final on Sunday, April 14th.
All the matches will be held at the Monte Carlo County Club, which has a stunning panorama at its main venue. This is an exclusive claycourt tournament and the first of the Masters 1000 tournaments on clay.
The field is at full strength, with all but two of the WTA's top 20 not competing in Monte Carlo. This is expected to be Rafael Nadal's first tournament since recovering from a hip injury. He has a phenomenal record at this event, winning it a record 11 times.
Novak Djokovic has beaten him before there. And the Serbian is also making his own comeback after skipping this year's Miami Open. Carlos Alcaraz missed the event last year and is rumored to give it amiss this season. But at the time of writing, the World No. 2 is committed to play.
Some of the other contenders will include Jannik Sinner, who gets enormous crowd support in Monaco, defending champion Andrey Rublev, and former winner Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Being a Masters 1000 tournament means that the payout is lucrative. The tournament will commit to a prize money purse of €5,950,575, which is roughly 3% higher than 12 months ago. This is also the biggest payout in Monte-Carlo Masters history.
The champion of this year's edition will earn a cool €919,075 and receive the full 1000 ranking points. The runner-up will bank €501,880 and get 650 points.
