Holger Rune Withdraws From 2023 Laver Cup

Holger Rune won't be competing at the 2023 Laver Cup after he was forced to withdraw from the tournament.

The 20-year-old has been struggling with injuries and his health for some time, and most recently, he released a statement saying that he finally wants to get back to his top shape. It came after his seventh consecutive loss, and the statement quickly put Rune's Laver Cup participation into doubt.

The young Dane was supposed to be the highest-ranked player in the ATP Rankings at the tournament, and he was also supposed to play the popular exhibition for the first time in his career.

However, that won't be happening as Rune withdrew because of the injury, about which he talked in his statement, saying that he still feels pain. As a result, Team Europe's captain, Bjorn Borg, chose Alejandro Davidovich Fokina as the replacement.

Like almost every player, the Spaniard always wanted to play at the Laver Cup, and speaking to lavercup.com, Davidovich Fokina admitted that he wanted to be more consistent and possibly that's what granted him the spot.

"Last year was an amazing team. I was wondering if some day they are going to call me if I’m doing great on tour. My goal this year was to play more consistent all the year. You play against the best players in the world at Laver Cup. I am excited to be a part of Team Europe, to share the court with other great players and to have them supporting you."

On the other hand, Rune will now want to focus on the recovery and make sure that he will be ready for the 2023 China Open in Beijing, and the 2023 Shanghai Masters, which will be important tournaments for him. However, the most important moment will come at the 2023 Paris Masters, where he's the defending champion.
