Holger Rune vs Grigor Dimitrov: 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters - Preview & Prediction

| by Zachary Wimer

Holger Rune and Grigor Dimitrov will meet in the third-round of the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters in what will be their second match of the day.

Both of these players know Monaco inside and out because they both live in the city. Both have played in Monte Carlo numerous times, so this will be a proper showdown of two players who are good on clay.

Dimitrov has historically played well on the surface but has been tremendous this year, as he proved recently in Miami. He's back to winning ways in Monaco and looking as solid as ever in pursuing an ATP Masters 1000 trophy.

Rune nearly won it last year, losing in the final, but he's back this year with some form. He played well in his first match, but Sumit Nagal caused him some trouble.

Head-to-head:

Rune and Dimitrov played a few times against each other, and Dimitrov has had more success so far. The Bulgarian leads the Dane 2-1 in H2H so far, with one of those wins coming earlier this year in Brisbane.

It was actually in the final, and Dimitrov's first trophy in many years. He hasn't stopped playing well since then and is looking solid in Monaco despite it being on clay. He's had some moments in the past, so it's not impossible to see him do really well in this match.

Grigor Dimitrov Holger Rune
2 H2H 1
9 Rank 7
32 Age 20
22-5 2024 W/L 14-7
435-278 Career W/L 108-69

Prediction:

I think Dimitrov will likely win this match because he's been super solid so far this year. The same can't be said for Rune, who has been mostly up and down.

Clay is his best surface, arguably, but Dimitrov can play on it well. The match against Nagal showed Rune can be quite erratic at times, and that won't fly against Dimitrov. That's why I think the Bulgarian will actually win. He's just more solid right now.

Prediction: Grigor Dimitrov to win in two sets.
