Grigor Dimitrov has had a very interesting start to this year, but after playing a lot of tennis lately, he pulled out of the 2024 Mexican Open in Acapulco.
The Bulgarian flew quite a bit under the radar last year. He played a really strong season, totaling nearly 50 wins, which was the first time in years he got close to that number.
The last time he won as many matches was when he was firmly in the Top 5, which shows the kind of level he's been playing on.
This year proved a continuation of that because he finally ended the title drought by winning the Brisbane International earlier this year. It was a fabulous event for him and a great win over Holger Rune in the final.
He kept playing well after that, making the Marseille Open final and the Rotterdam Open semi-final. The Marseille final was a loss for him, but he's still been one of the best tennis players this year, with a combined record of 13-3 so far.
The flip side of that coin is that he played a lot of tennis matches recently, and eventually, athletes tend to run out of steam. He's not the oldest player on the ATP Tour, but he's three months away from turning 33, so not the youngest anymore, either.
His upcoming schedule was supposed to take him to the sunny shores of Acapulco, but he won't be playing at the ATP 500 tournament in Mexico.
The Bulgarian pulled out of the event, presumably to give himself a rest before the Sunshine Double of Indian Wells and Miami, which are two ATP Masters 1000 events.
He didn't provide any statement, but most probably, the withdrawal is in the hope of giving himself a much-needed rest. He's been playing well, so it's not like he really needs the points, either.
