Gael Monfils voiced concerns over his performance after a string of losses since his comeback from a six-month injury hiatus.
After an extended break due to injury, former world No. 6 on the ATP Tour, Gael Monfils has struggled to regain his winning form. The 36-year-old Frenchman recently admitted to being "very far" from the level of play he desires after losing in the first round of the Banja Luka tournament to Jiri Lehecka in two sets.
This defeat marks the fourth consecutive loss Monfils has faced since his return to the sport. In an interview with L'Equipe, Monfils expressed his concerns about his current level of play and acknowledged the considerable gap between his performance and that of top players.
However, despite injuries mounting up, Monfils remains determined to improve. He emphasized the need to "go back to work" and continue pushing himself.
"I'm not far, I'm very far from that level. I'm not even sure that I really have the level to win matches. For the moment, I'm far from winning matches. We have to go back to work, continue."
"If I'm here, it's because I want to do it. I know I'm very far away. You have to go back to work, continue. I wouldn't say get closer to these guys, but being far away would already be cool. He is the top level."
The Frenchman also talked about his plans for the upcoming weeks. Like other players on the ATP Tour, or his wife on the WTA Tour, he elected to go down a level and compete at the Challenger level to regain some of the confidence and win some matches.
"I'm going to play a Challenger in Ostrava next week to try to win matches."
